Sept 2021

The CCC would like to take this time to send out a big hello to all of The Glen membership including the many new owners who have recently purchased during this period of covid restraint.

As disappointed as we are that the pandemic and resulting border closures have stopped us in our tracks for the last year and a half, our committee continues to meet on a monthly basis to plan events for when The Glen returns to some form of normalcy.

For those who are now able to enjoy The Glen facilities and are interested in events going on in the surrounding communities, we have local events and information available for you in the Events section of the Glen website. theglenatmaplefalls.com, CCC events and news, Local Events & Information. These links are updated by the local communities and should be current.

We look forward to seeing everyone at The Glen in the near future.

Thank you. Stay safe.

Dianne Lust

Chair: Community Connections Committee (CCC)

We miss you Glen friends and neighbours,

The CCC hopes everyone is staying safe during this difficult time with Covid-19 on both sides of the border. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Glen when it’s safe to do so.

This may be a little early but we are trying to organize future events that meet Washington State and Whatcom County Safe Start safety requirements. It is proving challenging as our events involve getting lots of people together to share a common passion.

Earlier this year, we sent out a survey.  We received an overwhelming response with great ideas, unfortunately most of the ideas may not fall into the safe category now, so we have attached another survey to see what types of events you might be interested in attending and how many people you would be comfortable being around at an event. Would you be interested in any virtual events, whether it be artwork, information sessions or something else?

We appreciate your comments.

Thanks for all your support while we are creating new ways to hold our events for you at The Glen.

Stay safe.

THE UPFRONT THEATRE COMEDY CLUB

Thanks to our recent survey results your Community Connections Committee is pleased to announce that our next CCC/Night on the Town will see us in prime seats at Bellingham’s widely acclaimed Upfront Theatre Comedy Club.

The Upfront Theatre near Bellingham’s downtown waterfront is a cabaret style venue that offers live improv comedy. We have secured 50 seats for 7:30pm Saturday July 11, 2020 and could extend this number to a full house – 100 seats — if enough Glen members confirm their ticket requirements no later than May 20.   A full house suggests we may enjoy some very special, made-for-the-Glen lines.  All seats are $15.00 including fees and taxes and availability is limited. To avoid disappointment, please secure your seats by using the convenient link below no later than May 20.

Dinner will be an option before the show and the venues available near the theater will depend on the number of people signed up.  Information on restaurants, menus and prices will be available by early May.  All who confirm their theatre seat requirements before May 20 will be advised before the event regarding restaurant possibilities, prices and menus and can choose at that point whether to book dinner reservations with our group or arrange dinner independently.  The latter alternative would see you join the rest of us before 7:30pm at the theatre.

Theatre seats are limited so please secure your spots early. As usual, this CCC/NOTT is open to all Glen members, their families, friends and Glen staff.  Minimum age restriction for this event will be 18.

Happy New Year everyone. As 2020 comes upon us we are planning our upcoming calendar of events and as always, we are trying to give you more options and to improve the ones we have.

We would love it if you would help us out by filling in the following survey. We will try to accommodate as many ideas as possible remembering that most of our events are held on summer weekends so the number of events will be limited.

Thanks so much for your participation and making the Glen an exciting place to be.

NIGHT ON THE TOWN, CRAZY FOR YOU

The Glen’s much-loved NITE ON THE TOWN (NOTT) event returns for a very special Opening Night on Friday, November 29 when The Bellingham Theater Guild presents Gershwin’s CRAZY FOR YOU.

Billed as a romantic musical comedy, this live stage play features a zany rich-boy meeting a hometown, small town girl.  He’s a New York banker sent to Deadrock, Nevada to foreclose on her father’s rundown theater.  She doesn’t like him but he is smitten.  All this is set to a Gershwin score including songs like I Got Rhythm, Embraceable You, Someone to Watch Over Me and many more.

NOTT events include optional dinner at Anthony’s Hearthfire restaurant Early Bird Special 4 course menu $26 before the show. Theater tickets are $16.00 per seat ($8.00 for children). Dinner seating is by 5:15pm and theater curtain is at 7:30.

Geology Underfoot in Western Washington

Learn about local fossils (not Glen members), volcanoes & dinosaur-like birds when the Glen’s CCC sponsors a free, illustrated talk for Glen members, families and friends at Riverside Lodge on Saturday, June 22/19 at 6pm.

Ever heard of Diatryma, a 7 foot tall flightless bird that weighed in at some 350 pounds and lived in our area when dinosaurs roamed the earth?  Did you know that the only known tracks in the entire world left by this giant bird were discovered as rare and precious fossils in 2009 close to the Glen above Kendall junction?  By far the world’s oldest giant bird tracks, these fossils are now protected in the collection at Western Washington University in Bellingham.  You will be able to see and touch a life-sized fossil casting of the most perfect of these footprints when you attend our “Geology Underfoot” presentation.

Have you seen the impressive 3,000 pound solid rock perfect sphere on display in Bellingham outside Kulshan Hall at Whatcom Community College (behind the old Costco location)?  This amazing work of natural art “floats” in a thin (1mm) film of water in a bowl carved from the same rock that is believed to have originated at Jackass Mountain in British Columbia (somewhere beyond Hope) and was deposited in Bellingham by glacial ice.  In spite of its weight, it can be moved in its bowl by a child.

Did you know that Slide Mountain, a foothill extension of Mt Baker and the mountain directly across the Nooksack’s North fork from the Glen has yielded many fossils from its folded-slate exposed rock faces?

Join us when Dave Tucker, a research associate in the Geology Department at WWU brings his colourful slide presentation, knowledge and enthusiasm to describe for us the geologic and scenic wonders to be found close to the Glen and along the Mt Baker Highway.

Dave is the author of  “Geology Underfoot in Western Washington” whose 22 chapters guide its readers to easily accessible stops along Washington’s highways and trails.  He is also the author of the Northwest Geology Field Trips website at https://nwgeology.wordpress.com/. The website features several self-guided geology field trips in the North Fork Nooksack, written for the lay person.  Dave will talk about volcanoes, fossils and other wonders of our area along the Mt Baker Highway.  Copies of his beautifully illustrated book will be available for purchase. ($24.)

The Glen’s Community Connections Committee sponsors this and other free events from proceeds it receives from ticket sales and donations.  This event is suitable for family members aged five to fossil!

To better help us prepare for this event please use the link below to advise if you plan on attending. Tea, coffee and a special treat supplied but you MUST RSVP for this event confirming whether you will join us for:

1: Talk only; OR

2: For those that would like to extend the evening we will be serving a dinosaur themed dinner of ribs, salads and dessert for $15 PP and a special kid’s meal for under 12 years old at $7. Again, you must indicate on the RSVP if you would like the dinner as well as the talk.

RSVP HERE by June 19, 6 PM

Happy New Year Wishes from “The Glen” CCC

Last year was another busy year for the Community Connections Committee with plenty of work for our small group and the many volunteers and Glen staff who all worked so hard to make this year a success.  As committee chair, I would like to thank the members of our team, Phyllis, Barb, Karen and Linda for the many hours that they volunteered in the planning, preparation, implementation and clean-up of these very popular and positive community events.  We also welcomed this year Ron for his Night on the Town evenings and Mike for his Movie in the Meadow. These events add another dimension to the CCC catalogue. Thanks also to the many hard-working volunteers who shopped, prepped and cooked, poured beer and wine, served appetizers, ice-cream or popcorn, counted cash, sold tickets, carried trays, set up chairs, tables and tents, gathered bouquets of flowers and generally just worked hard for the fun of it; we simply couldn’t get it done without you.  And many thanks to our own Glen staff for the valuable work they do behind the scenes to ensure everything is in place and that we are as ready as we can be on “game day”.  And let’s not forget you, the Glen membership.  Thanks for taking the time to support these events with your attendance; bringing us closer together through community participation.  And a big shout out to our Community partners.  As our committee name suggests, our success is wholly dependent on the connections we make with the community outside our gates.   Again, this year we are so grateful to the generous businesses, food-vendors, musicians, wine merchants, the hobby brewers and ice-cream makers whose determined efforts made our events so successful.

THANK YOU

The CCC would like to thank everyone who came out and enjoyed the wonderful R & B band “BroHamM” on Saturday Aug 25. Regardless of the threatening drizzle, Glenner’s showed up in numbers to revel in rhythms past and present. Our new stage, with accompanying canopy, provided the ideal venue for the day. Once again, the committee received tremendous feedback for including Back East Barbecue and Kurly’s Kart; providing us all with tasty food for the event.

Thank you everyone for the donations that helped us bring this quality band to the Glen; and for those of you who wish to be included in those donations, you can do so with the following link.

NIGHT ON THE TOWN, DINNER AND THE THEATER

The CCC is bringing you our first NITE-ON-THE-TOWN in Bellingham presenting La Cage aux Folles on Friday, September 7/18.

TICKETS for La Cage aux Folles are available to the public via on-line sale as of August 1 but we have reserved a block of seats in advance held until noon Aug 16 so in order to secure seats we must know by then.  Tickets are $16.00 for adults, $14.00 for seniors (63 & older).  There are no taxes or surcharges applicable and all prices are in US$.  All seats are reserved and all tickets are non-refundable.

DINNER before the show (optional).   Those wishing to join our group for dinner before the show will meet at Anthony’s Hearthfire Grill.  Many of us consider Anthony’s our favorite restaurant in the county.  Better yet, with our early seating (being on time for the theater’s 7:30 pm curtain following a leisurely dinner requires us to be at the restaurant by 5pm and seated no later than 5:15), we qualify for their Early Bird Special — now a 4 course dinner at $24.95.  The regular evening à la carte menu will also be available.  The restaurant overlooks the yacht club in Bellingham Bay and is conveniently located less than 5 minutes from the theater.  More information about Anthony’s Hearthfire (including a sample early bird menu and a location map) is available here:

http://www.anthonys.com/restaurants/detail/anthonys-hearthfire-grill-squalicum-harbor

Please note:  depending upon how many of us wish to meet at the restaurant for dinner, there is a possibility that we may exceed the number of seats available for a group booking.  To ensure space is available for other patrons, the maximum group size that the restaurant can accommodate on this occasion will be 40. So, if you are looking forward to both dinner with the group and the show, please RSVP as soon as possible to ensure you have a seat at one of our Glen Group tables.  Those unable to be accommodated at Anthony’s Hearthfire within our Glen Group reservation may wish to book individually with the restaurant.  Alternately, several other quality restaurants are located within 5 minutes of the theater. Dinner costs are billed individually and paid at the restaurant.

To secure your tickets, please use the link below by noon on Aug 16th.

As committee chair, I would like to thank the members of our team for the many hours that they volunteered planning, preparing and implementing these very popular and positive community events.  Thanks also to the many hard-working volunteers who shopped, prepped and cooked, poured beer and wine, served appetizers, ice-cream or popcorn, counted cash, sold tickets, carried trays, set up chairs, tables and tents, gathered bouquets of flowers and generally just worked hard for the fun of it; we simply couldn’t have done it without you!  And many thanks to our own Glen staff for the valuable work they do behind the scenes to ensure everything is in place and that we are as ready as we can be on “game day”.

Let’s not forget you, our fellow Glen members.  Thanks for taking the time to support these events with your attendance and your money, bringing us closer together through your participation.  And a big shout out to our Community partners.  As our committee name suggests, our success is wholly dependent on the connections we make to the community outside our gates.   Again, this year we are so grateful to the generous businesses, food-vendors, musicians, wine merchants, the hobby brewers and ice-cream makers whose determined efforts made our events so successful.

MUSIC IN THE MEADOW AUG 26, 2017-08-30The CCC would like to thank all the volunteers and everyone who supported another Music in the Meadow Concert to help raise funds for the permanent Glen Community Stage. We hope you all enjoyed the band Midnight Legend and all their encores as well as our own DJ Fish who, once again, kept everyone entertained before and after the band. Our food trucks Kurly’s Kart and Cicchittis Pizza fed us well and we sold over 500 food tickets.

A special thanks to Linda who donated all those fantastic artisan cookies that raised $269 and to Darlene who visited folks and collected another $246. Thanks too to those that donated at the ticket sales location and the food carts.  Altogether we raised over $675 at this event. Thanks to your support it has enabled us to raise over $1,300.00 since May this year for the stage fund. We look forward to more Music in the Meadow concerts and other fun events next year as we get even closer to our new stage.

If anyone wasn’t able to donate at the concert the link below is still live for anyone wishing to do so and you can charge it to your Glen account.

Second Annual Beer & Cider Tasting Thanks

On July 22, 2017, we held our Second Annual Beer and Cider Tasting with 141 participants which is our best tasting event to date. This year it was great to promote Aslan Brewing from Bellingham, Scuttlebutt Brewery from Everett, Rambling Route Cider from Yakima and Washington Gold Cider from Lake Chelan. Due to the popularity of the event and requests for different products we will add dark beers and more flavours of cider for the next tasting.

Door prizes went to Rob in Div. 6, Sang in Div. 1, Ingeberg in Div. 5, Angela in Div. 6, Jen in Div. 5 and Phyllis in Div. 7.

The proceeds from this event will help sponsor the next Music in the Meadow August 26th.

The CCC team thanks all the many volunteers who made this event such a success, we couldn’t do it without you.

MUSIC IN THE MEADOW

The Community Connections Committee would like to extend a whole-hearted thank you to all of the Glen members and staff for your wonderful support of our first Music in the Meadow concert held on Saturday May 20th. Your energetic response provided an awesome finish to the many weeks of preparation and anticipation leading up to this event.

Our thanks also, goes out to our four entertainers of the Badd Dog Blues Band, whose rhythm and blues echoed through the Glen for 3 full hours; and to our own “Uncle Fish DJ” for prepping the crowd with his boundless array of tunes and his DJ skills.   Thanks also to Back East BBQ for their untiring efforts that kept us well fed with great barbecued dishes and wholesome salads and sides. It was a great day weather-wise and your participation made it an especially memorable event.

In addition, we would like you to know proceeds from your participation in our previous events (Wine Tasting, Edaleen ice-cream event and Octoberfest Beer Tasting) meant that we were able to make Music in the Meadow a complimentary concert. And it gets better yet: because of your generous contributions at the concert we are proud to announce that we have collected over $850 dollars for the Glen Community Association Stage Fund.

For those of you who wanted to donate to the Stage Fund but did not have cash on hand at the event, or for those who were unable to attend and want to contribute to this great cause, please use the link below. With a mouse click, you can donate directly using your Glen account. Your donation will be documented and will appear on your next quarterly statement.

Thanks again for your generous support from all of us at the Community Connections Committee.
